River Experience
Green Season Safari in South Luangwa National Park, Zambia
The green season from November to March, is a great time to see the African bush decked out in new foliage, with breathtaking skies and magnificent colours. First occasional short rain showers start in November, while from January to March sometimes heavy but usually short afternoon showers occur.
Rains do not occur daily and never last more than a few hours, allowing you to enjoy game drives and birding to the full extent.
Some 47 migrant bird species visit the area and together with the huge variety of indigenous birds this makes this time of the year the best time for bird watching. Furthermore, during the green season game is spotted easily on the dry open plains.
The peak of the rainy season, January to March, is the time when the Luangwa River is in full flood and all the pools and lagoons are filled with water. The sometimes heavy but usually short afternoon showers are more frequent now. The night sky is torn by lightening and roaring thunder interrupts the night sounds. With sunrise the clouds clear and the morning awakes to a crystal clear day.
The 8 nights River Experience offers the great opportunity to visit the South Luangwa during the peak of the green season. By using the all-season game drive loops in the Mfuwe area you are able to view animals and the rich birdlife. Besides that, you will travel to the water-locked Northern sector by boat exploring the river with its manifold, flooded lagoons where wildlife is in abundance.
You begin your safari with a stay at Kafunta River Lodge (5 nights) where you join the daily morning and afternoon/night drives into the national park. We then take you to Mchenja Camp or Kakuli (3 nights) by river transfer. This is your base for the river safaris. The activities are conducted by boat and on foot, and take you to explore the banks of the Luangwa River as well as the brimming channels and lagoons that offer excellent game and bird viewing opportunities.
A river transfer will take you back to Kafunta River Lodge where you enjoy more of the great game viewing and photographic opportunities.
