Christmas
at Kafunta with Uncle Fred
Over
a farewell glass of wine I was asked by
Anke and Ron if I would take over the production
of the Newsletter. You will note it was
the ‘farewell’ glass and not
the Welcome drink we are all so used to.
They had had nearly three weeks to soften
me up and it obviously worked as I have
agreed
We
first came to Kafunta in 1999 and were so
impressed that we came back in 2000 with
friends and this Christmas was to be our
fifth visit. We had been in both 'brown'
and ‘green’ seasons and had
enjoyed such a most enjoyable Christmas
and New Year in 2002 that there was only
really one choice when seeking a venue for
2004/5. One Email and the deed was done!
It does not come much easier than that!
So? What brings us 5,000 miles from the
cold, commercial “Christmas”
of Europe to the somewhat damp but nicely
warm South Luangwa Valley? Nothing more
than the relaxed old fashioned holiday with
friends that we all used to enjoy! Everything
seems to be just what you need for a relaxing
break.
There is some rain, and some bad roads,
but the Mopane is bright Green and everywhere
is fresh and beautiful. Most mammals have
dropped their young in anticipation of the
season of plenty and the bird life is getting
ready to do the same. Almost all are in
breeding plumage which makes identification
a little easier for novice twitchers. The
river is full and whilst the pontoon shortcut
is out of service you are compensated by
regular and exciting visits by Elephant
and Lion to the tender fresh grass in front
of the Lodge.
One
of the local Elephants has actually produced
twins, a very rare event, and they have
been frequent visitors to the river bank
between the bar and the main river. We have
called the mother ‘Gemini’ for
obvious reasons and we are pleased to report
that they seem to be doing well.
On
Christmas Eve, there was the regular Carol
service on the Bridge at Mfuwe Gate which
was well attended as always. The Lodges
put on a spread and the people from the
village come to sing and dance. Until you
have sung “Away in a Manger”
accompanied by grunting Hippo and with a
backcloth of an African sunset you have
not experienced a genuine Luangwan Christmas.
The
Game drives etc., are always enjoyable,
the Park is relatively undisturbed. The
wildlife is superb and getting better all
the time.
So if like us you seek an escape from a
busy commercial Christmas you will come
to the Luangwa Valley, relax and enjoy yourselves.
Enjoy the greenery and the wildlife and,
if you must seek a touch of decadence, you
can drink champagne in the natural Hot tub
whilst watching the local wildlife wander
by. It does not come much better than this.
Believe me!
